So last night,
I watched on CNN and NBC as our nation rejoiced over the death of one of the worst criminals in the history of the world.
I agree, this is huge for the fight of the war on terror, but is it normal for us to be excited about the death of someone?
How does it look to the rest of the world to see one of the most powerful, influential countries in the modern world excited about killing someone?
Don’t get me wrong, PLEASE. This isn’t some sympathetic run-of-the-mill defending the bad guy post. I promise. I simply think our reaction to all this is only a sign of the times.
Why didn’t we meet this news with sober, quiet, respectful though, and maybe even sadness?
Doesn’t it remind of you of 9/11 at all? In case you’ve forgotten, that was one of the biggest atrocities in the history of the world, and Osama Bin Laden was the mastermind of it. And he was proud of it. And we all hated him for it.
And that was all 10 years ago.
Have we forgotten, with time, those that were lost on that day and those that were lost fighting the war that it started?
His death is a symbol of the closing of a huge, sad, dark, and trying time in the history of the United States.
Where do we go from here?
Let me be very clear:
I do not believe everything will resolve and be okay.
If anything, I believe things might be the opposite.
At least for a while.
If you’re reading this, and you’re wondering what I’m getting at, just know that I’m trying to say this:
Be respectful. We’re always tought as children that when we win a football, basketball, baseball, soccer, whatever sport game, to meet the other team with respect.
Let’s remember we haven’t always done what’s right here in America, and that this took a lot of time to get too.
Let’s remember those who have actually done the fighting for us to get here.
